DestinationCamp 2019: a review

For the second year in a row Outdooractive was on site as a partner: At the DestinationCamp, which took place from May 22 to 24 at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, representatives of the tourism industry met to exchange views and ideas on challenges and developments. Data management, machine learning and artificial intelligence were important core topics. After the joint discussion, results and solutions were presented.

After the opening on the first day of the event, the second day saw numerous sessions on various topics related to tourism. As usual, the topics could be submitted in advance. A very instructive exchange of expert knowledge and experience took place. Above all, the causes of many problems were identified in this context.

In the morning of the third day of the DestinationCamp the results of the different sessions were presented. Afterwards, the participants were divided into six scenario workshops. In these workshops, the main focus was on finding solutions for the topics of the sessions from the day before. The challenges of the individual scenario workshops were as follows:

  • Together we develop a master plan for the DMO in the matter of Open Data.
  • We build THE super app.
  • We think of tomorrow’s DMO from the point of view of tourists, service providers, locals and politicians.
  • How do we develop sustainable destinations with today’s digitization tools?
  • We develop a communication and media plan for the year 2025.
  • What does the trend “Sharing not selling” mean for us in tourism?

The results and impulses will be presented in fall in the work exhibition of the DestinationCamp.

Our conclusion:

The unique format of the DestinationCamp offers optimal conditions for an open exchange of knowledge. Impulses from various tourism sectors are collected in advance. For this reason, you can find out first-hand what is happening in the industry and what the players want. This makes it very easy to derive alternative courses of action.
