The Family keeps growing: Outdooractive acquires ViewRanger

It’s official: we welcome ViewRanger to the Outdooractive family – UK’s market leader for outdoor tourism.

This further step of Outdooractive’s continuous development emphasizes the move to broadening the international audience and evolving the product line with more highlights.

Founded in Cambridge, England, in 2006, ViewRanger was started as an early app pioneer with the vision to place digital map information directly into the landscape for users to view on electronic devices.

ViewRanger is characterized by high-quality digital topographic maps being provided by 52 national mapping agencies and international cartographic publishers; works with more than 600 organisations – including national parks and major outdoor brands – who publish and promote route guides through the app. The app is being used and trusted by more than 500 Search and Rescue teams across Europe, the US and Canada.

It’s additional features and strong local and international community of 4,6 million subscribers and about 30,000 fans on social networks, are exceptional bonuses for the partners of Outdooractive as well as a significant opportunity to benefit from each other’s know-how.

Craig Wareham, Co-Founder of ViewRanger, said “Over the past six months both brands have worked closely together to create the ultimate outdoor experience for the users of the platform. Together we now connect the largest community of outdoor enthusiasts and tourism partners. “

Hartmut Wimmer, our Founder and CEO, added “At a time when the tourist industry is facing huge challenges, our collaboration will offer instant exposure for destinations to our combined user base, enabling them to quickly attract visitors as restrictions are relaxed.

The outdoor adventure market in Europe and the UK, is expecting major growth, as social restrictions, in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, are gradually lifted. Initially research suggests that staycations and local tourism will be the first to recover, but given time international visitors will want to experience the great outdoors as well.
We have now opened an office in the UK which will support the growth of partners and users in the region.

As previously announced we have also recently acquired MountNpass, the market leader in France for cycling tourism. Its digital cycling network includes 8,000 recommended cycling routes and 120,000 subscribers. This is an exciting addition to the cycling content for the worldwide user community.

With these acquisitions Outdooractive is now Europe’s largest integrated portal connecting tourism stakeholders with a combined community of 7.3 million outdoor enthusiasts.
